Overview

Whitney Young High School is one of approximately 54 Option Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Under the umbrella of the LAUSD’s Educational Options Branch we offer students a comprehensive academic program, the graduation requirements are the same as all other high schools in the district. We are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, WASC. “Young High School” is designed to provide an alternative for students who have not been successful, for various reasons, in the traditional high school environment. Students feel that their educational and personal needs would be better served in an individualized instructional program. Students benefit from an instructional program that allows them to learn at their own pace, frequently assisted by a concerned and helpful teacher. Whitney Young is a very small high school. The principal, office manager and three teachers make up the full time staff, a counselor and resource teacher is assigned at least once a week. This small size allows for personalized instructional time that cultivates and facilitates learning for the individual student. The instructional design allows students to complete classes before the traditional semester has ended, increasing the number of credits that can be earned within a semester. Our program is better known as a “credit recovery” instructional program. After an evaluation of a student’s academic progression determines he/she is behind in credits the student and the student's parent/guardian is given a referral to arrange an enrollment conference. During the conference:
→The student and the parent learn about the individualized Standards Based - Common Core instructional program.
→Review and sign the Student Enrollment Contract
→Evaluate the student's cumulative record and program the student into the appropriate classes.
→Establish short and long term goals that need to be met so that the student will graduate from high school on schedule.
